News Apprentice

Job Description: CBS Television Stations implemented the News Apprenticeship Program in 2005. The purpose of the Program is to develop strong newsroom leadership skills for those interested in behind the scenes editorial opportunities, as well as to attract a diverse pool of talented individuals who will contribute to our story selection and execution. In 2012, we are excited that KDKA/WPCW-TV will be participating in the News Apprenticeship Program.

The Program will expose candidates to the various disciplines of broadcast journalism, from the assignment desk to newscast writing and producing, promotion writing, and news editing to special projects. Apprentices will be working side by side with News Department professionals, learning their craft and gaining valuable experience and knowledge. This is truly a unique opportunity for a 2012 college graduate who has a serious interest in pursuing a career in TV News. We are seeking individuals who are looking to work “behind the camera” with an ultimate goal to be part of a Newsroom management team.

Each Apprenticeship will be of a six to twelve month duration. Candidates who are selected will be paid an hourly rate of pay, depending on market size. Stations will make every effort to find employment for those candidates who successfully complete the Program, either within the station where the Apprenticeship took place, or at another CBS Television Station. However, successful completion of the Program does not necessarily guarantee future employment. Apprentices will be considered “at will” employees and the Program can end at any time during the apprenticeship period, at the Station’s sole discretion.

Required Skills/Experience: • Candidates must be graduating in the Spring of 2012. • Only those individuals who are highly motivated and are self-starters need apply. • While a degree in communications or journalism is not required, strong writing skills are essential. Candidates will be required to take a broadcast writing test and will be asked to submit a one-page, single-spaced essay on why s(he) wants to go into broadcast journalism. • Participation in college TV stations, radio, newspapers or literary magazines will be taken into account. Also, membership in any professional organizations such as RTNDA or other Journalist Associations will be considered. Minimum Education Level: Bachelor’s Degree Major: Communications or Journalism preferred, but not required

Required Experience
BA/BS degree in Business, Marketing, Communications or related field
5+ years of outside sales experience using a consultative, solution selling approach.
Candidates must be a tenacious hunter focused on acquiring and closing new mid to large size accounts.
Consistent track record of success in achieving/exceeding revenue quota.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interpret marketplace needs and translate them into products/services.
Strong verbal/written communication and presentation skills.
Team selling skills and strong potential for team leadership.
Media/advertising/marketing industry experience preferred, but not required.
Sales Reporting/Forecasting experience.
Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and Internet applications.

Job Description:

WJAS, WMNY (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is seeking an individual to sell advertising to area businesses.  Account Managers are responsible for maintaining existing client relationships while aggressively cultivating new business through ongoing prospecting activities.  Successful candidates must possess exceptional communication, presentation, and negotiation skills. They must be self-motivated, goal-driven, and creative, with the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment.

Responsibilities:

Manage all aspects of client’s accounts from initial contact through collections and renewal; be able generate direct and non-traditional business to foster revenue growth for the station.

Qualifications:

Minimum 2 years of Marketing/Sales experience OR equivalent, with excellent business development and problem-solving skills; should be highly motivated with a deep desire to sell and have a proven record of sales success.
